VEUVE CLICQUOT - Vintage Reserve 1988 75cl Bottle
This vintage is characterised by wines of finesse and great ageing potential. The growing season of the vines went very smoothly without any major climatic mishaps. After a mild winter, dry and wet moths alternate during springtime. Bud-burst occurs in the third week of April. The flowering takes place quickly, between 16 and 20th June. Weather conditions are favourable and ensure an excellent berry set, with no shatter and very little 'millerandage'. During the ripening period, weather conditions often vary between very good and less favourable. Nevertheless the grape maturity progresses normally. The harvest last from September 19 to the 27th. They take place under excellent climatic conditions, leading to the perfect ripening of the grapes (9 GL) while preserving a remarkable level of acidity. This Vintage is made up from twenty villages all classified as Premiers or Grands Crus. They are located in the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims regions. The dominance and power comes from the Pinot Noir, which represents 57% of the blend. The finesse and elegance are achieved from a complement of 32% Chardonnay and 12 % Pinot Meunier. The effervescence is both delicate and long lasting. The bouquet is fine and complex, strong in the aromas of dried fruits and flowers. There is an elegant harmony in the nose around toast and brioche notes. In the mouth, the wine is firm and well structured, with masses of substance and refinement. Such wine accompanies perfectly lobsters, scallops and sea fish. After a few more years of ageing, one would not hesitate to offer it with poultry or with meat dishes such as veal.

VEUVE CLICQUOT - Yellow Label Magnum 1.5lt
A Champagne House is eventually judged on the quality of its Brut Non Vintage. It is in the making of such a wine that the true Art of Champagne blending reveals itself. This is an art in which the House of Veuve Clicquot excels. Our Brut Yellow Label reflects the superb vineyards we own and the consistent nature of our House style. The predominance of Pinot Noir provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, while a touch of Pinot Meunier rounds out the blend. Chardonnay adds the elegance and finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine. Grapes from as many as 50 to 60 different Crus go to the blending of Yellow Label. Traditionally, the proportion of each grape variety used is : 50 to 55% Pinot Noir - 15 to 20% Pinot Meunier - 28 to 33% Chardonnay. These figures vary slightly from year to year according to conditions. The Chef de Caves has to achieve the total consistency of taste, which makes Yellow Label so immediately recognisable, so utterly reliable both in terms of quality, colour and bouquet. He will draw on priceless Reserve wines for the blend: from 25 to 35%, sometimes as much as 40% to ensure the continuity of the House style. Each of these older wines - perhaps 9 years old - is kept separately to preserve the unique qualities of the vineyard and the vintage. First, Yellow Label looks beautiful: golden-yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny bubbles. Next it is so pleasing to the nose: initially reminiscent of white fruits and raisins, then of vanilla and later of brioche. Note the fine balance between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties and the toasty aromas following the ageing in the bottle. The first sip delivers all the freshness and forcefulness so typical of Yellow Label with a symphony of fruit tastes following on. Here is a true member of the powerful Brut family, well structured, admirably vinous. The lingering aromas echo and re-echo, with each fruit or spice note distinct. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors - forcefulness and finesse - and to hold them in perfect balance. This consistent power to please makes it ideal as an aperitif, and perfect as the Champagne to enjoy with a meal.

BOLLINGER - Special Cuvée Magnum 1.5lt
Bollinger only produces two different blends: that designed for the non-vintage Special Cuvée, and that which will become vintage Grande Ann?e. Following the harvest period, Bollinger's decisions on blending are not made before January. The blend for the Special Cuvée is an ideal version of the classic Champagne blend, using the different grapes of a given year from a variety of crus, with the addition of older, reserve wines. This blend necessarily incorporates subtle variations each year whilst remaining consistent to a style. It is, therefore, the hardest of all Bollinger to make. It contains the full expression of the Bollinger style and the House feels it should be judged on this - its benchmark wine. The denomination Special Cuvée was created in 1911. The idea came from William Folks, then partner of the illustrious London House of Mentzendorff. This great wine lover felt it was an insult to simply call this great wine 'non vintage'. The suggestion of naming it 'Special Cuvée' was immediately approved by Monsieur Bollinger. A blend par excellence, the Special Cuvée is the purest expression of the Bollinger style; of its craftsmanship and its singular conception of what a champagne should be. It is, therefore, on this wine that the House of Bollinger shows how it is different from other Champagne Houses, asserts its qualitative policy and by which it asks to be judged. Madame Bollinger - 'I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty.'

BOLLINGER - La Grande Année Rosé 1999 75cl Bottle
As its name suggests it, La Grande Année Rosé is a dedication of La Grand Annee. To this fine blend is added some red wine from Champagne coming from a very specific plot of land of less than 1.5 acres, located in the heart of the Ay terroir: La Cote aux Enfants. This wine, named after the plot of land it comes from, and made is a true Burgundian style, is not produced every year, as perfect maturity is required at the date of harvest. Consequently, La Grand Année Rosé remains an exception. It is a beautifully structured and full bodied wine, with a deep colour, and which develops intense aromas.

VEUVE CLICQUOT - La Grande Dame 1996 75cl Bottle
The winter of 1996 was extremely cold, with temperatures as low as -15 DegC, although this did not damage the vines. Spring was sunny and dry and budding began between 20 and 24 April, depending on the different grape varieties. May was grey and chilly and many vines in the Champagne region were caught by a couple of spring frosts. The Veuve Clicquot vineyards did not suffer any damage, however, thanks to their position on hillsides that are less subject to this type of frost. July was very dry and the grapes suffered near-drought conditions during the second fortnight. A few salutary showers at the end of August brought in ideal weather temperatures for growth. Harvesting started on 16 September for the most mature grapes; harvest conditions were excellent, with hot, dry weather prevailing. Never in living memory could people remember such a balance between maturity and freshness: the very dry summer had naturally concentrated the grapes' components. The first tastings were extremely promising and indicated that the wine would mature exceptionally well. The basic blend is made up of 64% Pinot Noir chosen from Grand Crus in Ay in the Grande Valléee de la Marne area, and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims area. The blend also includes 36% Chardonnay from three Grand Crus only: Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger all in the Cote des Blancs. La Grande Dame 1996 is golden in colour with light green accents, fine, light bubbles. Initially the nose is rich and intense, evoking fresh fruit (apricots, peaches from the vine, citrus fruits) and dried fruits (hazelnuts, marzipan). After aeration, the nose opens up to reveal lightly toasted and mineral notes as well as aromas of mild spices and brioche. On the palate the aromatic complexity of this champagne dominates. The balance between the strength of Pinot Noir and the elegance of Chardonnay grapes has rarely achieved such perfect harmony. The wine is round and generous on the palate, with a delicate and silky texture and a dynamic, sparkling final edge - very typical of the 1996 vintage. The finish is quite remarkable, seemingly never-ending. This is a wine which constantly evolves once it is opened, revealing a gracious, pure structure, and a promise that it will mature magnificiently over time. 1996 is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant versions of La Grande Dame. Already a dazzling choice of aperitif for a special occasion, over the years it will gradually reveal a more assertive personality that will accompany the most refined dishes to perfection.

BOLLINGER R.D. - 1996 75cl Bottle
R.D. ('recently disgorged') was proposed for the first time by Madame Bollinger in 1961 on the basis of the 1952 vintage. This concept is unique, absolutely without equivalent in Champagne. In terms of blending, R.D. is a Grand Annee, but a Grande Annee that has aged in the Bollinger cellars for a longer period: a minimum of eight years and up to 20-25 years. This slow maturation allows for reinforcing the aromatic subtlety and complexity of the wine, developing a highly original style recognised and appreciated by connoisseurs of great wines. R.D. is also a recent disgorging that guarantees unique freshness and vivacity as regards the wine's venerable age and which allows the aromas to fully express themselves. In order to inform the consumer the disgorging date is printed on the label. By nature, the R.D. boasts a nearly-unlimited capacity for conservation, before of after disgorging. R.D. is an 'extra-brut', i.e. the dosage is very low (less than 5 grammes of sugar per litre).

VEUVE CLICQUOT - La Grande Dame Rosé 1995 75cl Bottle
1995 began like the 3 previous years with a mild, wet winter. Budbreak took place between 6 and 17 April, one week ahead of time, given the average date of budbreak over the last few years. Some vineyards in the Marne and Aube were affected by frost at the end of April and mid-May but fortunately the House's vines were not damaged. After a short cool period, hot, nearly summery weather conditions occurred and the end of flowering was excellent. July was particularly hot and stormy and the threat of mildew had never been as strong since 1958. Constant attention and excellent integrated control meant the future harvest could be saved. As the harvest approached the grapes matured rapidly, and a late attack of botrytis had no lasting effects. Harvesting for the Chardonnay began on 21 September, with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier following one week later. Staggering the dates of the harvest and selective picking meant good-quality grapes were brought in, thus maximising the potential quality of the vintage. The balance of musts was excellent. The 1995 vintage is similar to that of 1988, with an average strength of 9.5GL and acidity levels of 9 g/l. The wine promises great ageing potential. The lots at Bouzy planted with Pinot Noir which go to make our red wines were harvested on 2 October. The basic blend is made up of 62.5% Pinot Noir from the grand crus in the Ay (Grande Vallée de la Marne) and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy vineyards (Montagne de Reims). The other 37.5% is composed of Chardonnay using three grand crus, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, from the Cote des Blancs area. The Grande Dame Rosée 1995 is obtained with the addition of 15% of red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes from the village of Bouzy. The vast majority of grapes comes from the Clos Colin, one of our best lots situated in the heart of this Grand Cru. The Grande Dame Rosée 1995 is limpid and has a magnificent warm, very deep colour with glowing bronze tones. Effervescence is fine and long-lasting. The quality and distinction of this vintage are mirrored in the intense, elegant nose. Notes of red fruits (raspberry, fresh strawberry) and toasted aromas (grilled flavours, gingerbread, dried fruit, honey) complement each other to perfection and bestow an unforgettable bouquet on this wine. In the mouth the wine confirms the complexity of the nose. With a rare aromatic concentration, the Grande Dame Rosée 1995 reveals exceptional fullness and volume and a dense, deep texture, with the Pinot Noir maintaining its structure. The silkiness so characteristic of La Grande Dame is already present and with time this sensation of mellowness will be accentuated. The extremely harmonious finish, together with the smoothness and mellowness of this wine, draws us into a world that radiates sensuality.
