DOMAINES OTT - Clos Mireille, Blancs de Blancs 2005 75cl Bottle
Blanc de Blancs celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary in 1988 at the'Jules Verne' a the top the Eiffel Tower. This unparalleled wine, which has travelled throughout the world, is perfectly attuned to Mediterranean cuisine. This is ancient wine terrain distinguished for its mix of shale and clay and absence of limestone. The incomparable personality of Clos Mireille wines is no doubt owing to the estate's broad seafront location. The microclimate and sea spray provide highly favourable conditions for equally matchless white wines. Grapes varieties - se`millon for its fullness, mellowness and honey flavour. Ugni Blanc for its vigour and youth. Rolle for its smooth, fleshy qualities with floral, fruity notes. The vineyard of Clos Mireille has 50 ha of vines for production out of a total area of 170 ha. The parcels used for the production of Blanc de Blancs slope down as far as the sea. They are levelled into espaliers to enable even tilling and planting. Cultivation methods are traditional and the earth is mechanically tilled with the greatest care to the plant. Vines are pruned and trained using the cordon de Royat or double cordon method. Hand picking. Highly selective grape sorting. Extremely delicate pressing in vertical presses. Slow (alcoholic and malolactic) fermentation followed by ageing in oak casks. Bottled in spring of the following year then stored in cellars for 8-12 months. A well-developed, complex, distinctive bouquet with rich fragrances of stone fruit, spice and wild flowers. PIO CESARE - Barolo DOCG 2003 75cl Bottle
The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce Pio´s Barolo come from the family vineyards around the village of Serralunga d´Alba. Pio´s own grapes account for about 70% of production, and they also source grapes from the most favourable areas in Castiglione Falletto and Monforte, the same stock they have used for the last hundred years. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body, those from Castiglione Falletto offer an ethereal and tempting nose, and the fruits from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. The harvest is the foundation upon which we build the Barolo. Each grape is hand selected, a long, slow process that can take up to three weeks, during the end of October and the beginning of November. Next the grapes are soft pressed and fermented at 25 to 26 degrees and in contact with the skins for 20 to 25 days. There is a long maturation in French oak, well beyond the terms imposed by the DOCG in order to give their Barolo its personal mark. The colour is an intense glossy garnet, with orange reflections. The bouquet is ethereal, with hints of violets, blackberry jam, licorice and cloves. The palate is dry and austere, with a lingering hint of almonds.

CLOUDY BAY - Chardonnay 2004 75cl Bottle
The scent of pink grapefruit and lemon blossom is beautifully counterbalanced by smoky, savoury aromatics, reminiscent of roasted cashews and macadamia nuts. The palate is rich yet refined with a chalky texture supporting the delicious mineral-like complexity and creaminess derived from traditional winemaking techniques. Gentle fruit handling has produced a tightly structured, elegant wine that will age gracefully over the next six to ten years. The grapes for this wine - predominantly the low yielding Mendoza clone with a lesser quantity of UCD6 and newer Burgundian clones - were harvested from nine estate and grower vineyards located in the Wairau and Brancott Valleys of Marlborough. Soils vary from the silty gravels found in Rapaura to the fine silty loams of Renwick and the Brancott Valley. The vineyards are planted at a density of 1,850 vines per hectare and all vines are trained to the Scott Henry trellis system. Settled spring weather at the start of the 2002 growing season and the continued effects of the 2001 drought, provided excellent flowering conditions and an abundant crop was set. Above average, but welcome, rains fell between November and the end of January, necessitating rigorous canopy management and selective fruit removal. Temperatures were generally quite cool during February, which slowed ripening and delayed the start of harvest, but idyllic autumn conditions prevailed during March and April, with brilliant sunny days and cool nights. At times a testing season for the vineyard crew ... a nail-bitingly slow but steady ripening period, which in the end delivered fruit with great concentration and a remarkable array of flavours and aromas. The chardonnay harvest commenced on 29th March and finished on 24th April. Stable but cool weather with intermittent showers persisted through the harvest period but all fruit was received at the winery in exceptional condition with excellent balance and flavour. Fruit composition averaged 23.9 Brix, pH 3.20 and acid 9.4g/l. Three quarters of the crop was machine harvested at night into half-tonne bins designed to minimise phenolic extraction and loaded directly into tank presses, the remainder was hand picked and handled the same way. The juice was then racked into stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. The tank portion was inoculated with a pure yeast strain, and then transferred to barrel once fermentation had started. The remainder was allowed to ferment using indigenous yeast strains. All batches were fermented in French oak barrels, 20 percent of which were new and most of the wine went through malolactic fermentation. The components were blended after one full year in barrel and the blend remained on yeast lees for a further period prior to a light fining for clarification, then bottling in the spring of 2003. Final analysis shows an alcohol of 14.0v/v, pH 3.34 and acid of 6.7g/l.

TOMASSO BUSSOLA - Amarone Classico BG 2002 75cl Bottle
From one of the three top producers from Veneto of Amarone della Valpolicella. Made by the 'repasso' method whereby the skins from the Amarone wines are added to the must during fermentation, this gives a hint of amaro to this lighter style of wine. It has a little tannin grip and lots of fruit. Very good.

DOMAINES OTT - Château Romassan, Bandol Rouge 2005 75cl Bottle
Château Romassan is located in the Bandol appellation where the land is comprised of limestone, sandstone and marl of the late Cretaceous marine period. These poor soils are offset by the large amount of stone in the soils throughout this appellation. The Bandol appellation is known for its terraced landscapes built from the hard stone with vines, which are planted into vast terraces with varying exposures. Cultivation methods are traditional and the soil is mechanically tilled and young shoots are trained with the greatest care to the plant. This bright ruby coloured wine is primarily mourvédre, which gives the wine a spicy character, which is complimented by a generous bouquet of blackcurrant and morello cherry. The wine is rich with tannins yet highly balanced making it an excellent choice for pairing with beef ribs, spicy dishes and cheese. It is best served at 59-64 degrees Fahrenheit. The grapes used in making this red wine come from vines no less than 15 years of age: mourvédre, a local variety which gives the wine its round, robust quality. This is also the dominant varietal in this wine (as required by the appellation), Cinsault for its fresh, silky elegance, Grenache to round off the wine and give it body, strength and bouquet, Syrah in small quantities to give verve to the wine and slight hints of liquorice. The grapes are all hand picked and go through a stringent selective grape sorting. Fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated vats followed by ageing in oak casks for 18 - 20 months. Appellation: Bandol

ISTVAN SZEPSY - Kiralyudvar Tokaji Cuvee Ilona 1999 500ml Bottle
'Tokaj - the wine of kings and the king of wines.' - Louis XIV From legendary Tokaj winemaker Istvan Szepsy. In '99, the Ilona is an early bottled five-putts-level sweet wine with an impressively tight structure. Its spicy minerals and peachy, quince-streaked fruit readily accommodate deft tones of barrel aging. As tasty as it has been from its days in cask, it's a young, firm wine that should develop slowly in the bottle. Its acid-extract structure absorbs strong sugar levels (roughly 135 gl) and allows the wine to seem muscular. Over time its interplay of succulence and wire will continue to delight the open-minded and oxidized-Tokaji traditionalists alike. 1999 Vintage - Outstanding - Approximating the optimum imaginable, and certainly the best year of the decade! Kiralyudvar's patience to harvest later resulted in plentiful quantities of outstanding Asu berries. It allowed the various terroirs to assert themselves in the wines. The wines of this vintage are of superb quality, massively structured, and will be very long-lived.

CHÂTEAU PETIT-VILLAGE - Pomerol 2001 75cl Bottle
Ruby-red colour. Enticing, expressive nose combines redcurrant, plum, tobacco, chocolate, light cedar and sexy oak. Supple with a good core of ripe tannins, nicely concentrated and fresh, with dark cherry and floral notes. Medium finish. A superb and exceptional vintage. 'Smoky, earthy notes intermixed with espresso roast, chocolate, plums, and black currants jump from the glass of this dark plum/ruby coloured wine. Chewy and fleshy, with sweet fruit, ripe tannin, medium to full body, and a sexy mouthfeel, it should be enjoyed between 2005-2016.' Robert Parker: 88-90/100. Fully ripe fruit was harvested by hand in wonderful vintage conditions. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats with extended maceration before the wine was transferred to new French oak barriques to undergo malolactic conversion. The exposure to oak at this stage imparted a lovely milky softness to the palate. The wine remained in barrel for 18 months, mellowing and gaining cedar notes.

ISTVAN SZEPSY - Kiralyudvar 6 Puttonyos Tokaji Aszu 2000 500ml Bottle
'Tokaj - the wine of kings and the king of wines.' - Louis XIV From legendary Tokaj winemaker Istvan Szepsy. The big-body and full-flavour when one initially tastes this wine makes one immediately think of a powerful and robust Tokaji 6 putts. Yet, it manages to retain the complexity and extravagance of past Kiralyudvar Aszus. Like the 1999 mixed fields Aszu, this wine is still quite young and has yet to show its true potential which should become more evident in the years to come. A lovely wine, with high sugar but thrilling balance and harmony. Aromas are rich and creamy, with honey and baked apple uppermost. There's a spicy, cinnamon note to the palate, with pineapple and grapefruits as well. Acidity is high, and the length is creamy and complex. Drink 2005-2035. 2000 Vintage - Outstanding - This vintage saw an unusually long growing period with an enormous heat summation over the year. The wines are intensely fruity with very high sugars and more subdued acids than 1999. Luscious wines with quality levels comparable to the those of 1999. Another outstanding year to follow 1999.

Graphite, blackberry, cassis and marischino cherries on the deep, potent nose. Black fruits, plum preserves, sweet oak and licorice permeate the palate. He has awarded vintages with 98 & 99 points!
