1995 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé B
Since the harvest of 1990, this is the first vintage to unite such a great maturity in the grapes. When the yield was assessed, the must had perfectly balanced polyphenols. The wines are very strongly coloured, almost opaque. The first impression gained of the fragrance is reminiscent of sugared plums, blackberry jam spices. The high proportion of Cabernet Franc (over 50 %) brings with it minty tannins full of freshness, elegance and complexity. The wines are silky and generous and are already very pleasurable to taste. The finish is harmonious, rich and full-bodied, lasting over several long minutes, a promise that this vintage has genuine keeping ageability. Age until: 2025

1995 Château Cheval Blanc 1er Grand Cru Classé A
Château Cheval Blanc, a 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) is unquestionably the leading estate in St. Emilion. It is located in the north-west of the St. Emilion appellation, bordering Pomerol. Cheval Blanc produces the most famous Cabernet Franc-based wine in the world and present régisseur Pierre Lurton is amongst the most talented winemakers working in Bordeaux today. Cheval Blanc requires a minimum 10 years of bottle age and the best vintages can last for 50 years or more. Starting to show a little more maturity this wine has an elegant nose, macerated plum fruit, spiced fruitcake, mature but maintaining good density. Quite ready on the palate, with integrated tannins giving just a little backbone. Lots of body and weight here, a meaty style. Just coming together and certainly drinking now.

1995 Château de Valandraud Grand Cru Classé
One finds signs of evolution at the rim here, while the core is still perfectly coloured with a deep purple colour. Unlike the 1998, the nose is marked by Merlot aromas of truffle, cinnamon along with a slight and pleasant toasted oak residue finely integrated to redcurrant notes. On the palate the wine has developed very well with years in bottle and still shows a massive side balanced by wonderful fruit richness and lush texture which should carry the wine for many years to come. I have not had the occasion to taste this wine in its youth, but I imagine that it always has had this natural richness (at times confused with over-extraction). The wine has a long finish with mineral undertones and a touch of leather after a while.

1996 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé B
This is the first vintage of Château Angélus to bear the status of "Premier Grand Cru Classé". It was a year with an uneven weather pattern, at times very hot, at others cool and alternately damp and dry. The vintage should attain the complexity of the great classical years. One of the smallest harvests of the last twenty years, the Merlot matured well, with considerable richness and subtlety. The Cabernet Franc has a quite exceptional density and fruitiness (the natural alcohol level recorded in the vats was between 13.2° and 13.95°). The wines have a rich colour, with a classical structure and a fruity fragrance that is quite dazzling. Age until: 2025

1997 Château Cheval Blanc 1er Grand Cru Classé A
Cheval Blanc owes its irresistible triumph not only to its traditional integrity, but also to its owners' dedication to quality. Its success is even more evident in difficult vintages. Stressed by an early scarcity of water but thanks to an exceptional terroir of gravel, the Cabernet Franc has maintained a welcome acidity which gives the wine a lively colour and an exemplary appearance. Solid on the palate and well-balanced, a good proportion of oak holds sway while awaiting its fruitiness to come into its own. Aromas of forest-floor add to the complexity of a wine that offers great satisfaction right now.

1998 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé B
This year is marked by a very even flowering. A particularly hot month of August resulted in good, even ripeness. The grapes have very thick skins and are rich in sugar and polyphenols; they are in a perfectly healthy state at the time of picking. These grapes have resulted in very deep wines, with excellent tannins and aroma. It is already clear that the Merlot is of exceptional quality; the natural alcohol level (more than 13.5 %) and the quality of the tannins puts this in the category of a very great vintage. The low-yielding Cabernet Franc (less than 30 hl/ha) is rich, aromatic, and well structured. Age until: 2020

1998 Château de Valandraud Grand Cru Classé
A particularly successful vintage showing lovely classical proportions, no doubt helped by the high percentage of Cabernet-Franc found in the wine. The colour shows a slightly evolved appearance with intense garnet and a ruby rim. Upon opening, the nose is a bit discrete and reveals oak and brown sugar notes but it develops wonderfully and with precision, showing wonderfully ripe and elegant Cabernet-Franc as well as some spiciness provided by a touch of cinnamon. The palate confirms the wine‘s potential: fully balanced from start to finish, full-bodied and endowed with a very good tannic structure, no unnecessary oak, very good purity of fruit with a bitter chocolate finish. Elegant and seamless, it leaves a very different impression from the rumoured over-extraction.
